I'm feeling stressed, weary and in need of escape. What's your go to song, sequence, show, when you need to kick the world out of mind for a while?

Workingman’s Dead always does the trick for me. Probably a bit of happy blue nostalgia as this was the first Dead we had as a youngster, and listened to who knows how many times. The studio Uncle John’s smoothes everything right out, followed by that lovely High Time. (Whenever Uncle John’s plays on the radio the jukebox in my mind always starts up High Time after the ending.)

Chin up, Rob, you are about to smile . . .

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-05-11.sbd.miller.83196.flac16

start your elixir with Uncle John's Band - the first few minutes should have you smiling, if not - the ending of UJB into a lovely Jerry solo - truly solo - will have your blues melted and you will be transported to a wonderful place . . . you could carry on through the sweet and majestic Wharf Rat followed by a decent Around and Around and then enjoy the nectar of the gods with the restorative Brokedown Palace . . .

Goin to leave this Brokedown Palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll roll roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time - in my time - I will roll roll roll
In a bed, in a bed
by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
all the way back back home
It's a far gone lullaby

sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come
since I first left home
Goin home, goin home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul

good luck, bon voyage . . . and I'm curious to know if it worked for you

for something completely different, Michael Hurley's last two CDs 'Ancestral Swamp' and 'Ida Con Snock' will take you to another place and just might put a smile on your face

Dick's Picks v4 (13-14 Feb 1970): helped me find the will to survive major surgery.

Bel Air from Can's Future Days, blissful and summery (YouTube splits it into two parts, but get the album anyway):
part 1:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irRZygMDCmo
part 2:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcmdpClwzv0&;feature=watch_response

Lots of classical, usually Bach, eg "Schlummert Ein...:

...or Mendelssohn's (written aged 16!) Octet:

Best wishes, Rob. I hope the stress isn't a big problem for too much longer.

No surprise here. The 11/24/79 China>Rider never fails to get me back on track. An explosion of musical joy.

I think i mentioned this before, but the first set of this often talked about show was the place i went when something happened in my life that i was having troubles dealing with. A former student passed away two weeks before his twin daughters were born. I needed to go somewhere, i would take my dog for walks around the neighborhood each night while listening to this:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-05-25.sbd.miller.87591.sbeok.flac16

I still associate that show with Henry, who probably never heard more than two Grateful Dead songs in his life.

Not as much of a downer would be the China>Rider from this one:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-02-24.sbd.windsor.199.sbefail.shnf

I mentioned to high flow the other day this is my stuck on a desert island with a gun to my head show and the China>Rider from it can cure all that is wrong with the world. I think Bill Graham's intro to this show proves its great for an escape.

Just discovered this. Beautiful Mission in the Rain, one of the few GD performances of this song. The Playin' > Wheel > Playin' will take you into parallel universe.

rob, if you are not already acquainted with the show

go to http://www.jerryradio.com/

scroll down until you find 04-12-03 Jorma Kaukonen & Barry Mitterhoff

104 minutes of pure acoustic escape

OK, so it isn't Grateful Dead, but all Dead and no variety makes rob a dull boy;)

but if it HAS to be Grateful Dead(or Dead related) I will again recommend

Phil Lesh & Friends 9/24/1994

Having such a high quality video from this vintage is nice and all but I don't find this performance a standout.

Jerry rips this Althea a lot harder and I think it just might do the trick for you. The China Cat from this show is also ON FIRE:

I still like the Althea on Without a Net.

Also, "EEP Hour" and The Wheel on the album because Jerry's pedal steel reminds me of hope somehow. Likewise the NFA>GDRFB from Skull & Roses.
